What outdoor storage really means

You're renting a patch of ground, not a building. That usually means a designated space in a fenced lot, sometimes with a gate code and lighting. Of the 10,032 outdoor facilities, 6,058 offer 24-hour access, so you can get to your rig on your schedule. The trade-off is exposure. Sun, rain, hail, and birds all have a shot at your RV. A good cover or regular wax helps, but nothing beats shade if you can find it. Ask about the surface too: gravel drains well, asphalt can crack, and dirt turns to mud. Check the gate hours before you commit. A lot that locks at 6 p.m. can wreck a Friday night departure.

When covered or indoor makes more sense

Outdoor is the budget option, but it's not always the smart one. If you're in a sunny state or a hail belt, consider covered. There are 3,361 covered facilities in the directory, and they shield the roof and gel coat from UV damage, which is the slow killer of RV finishes. Indoor goes further: 5,529 facilities offer it, and that's your best bet for winter storage or long gaps between trips. Indoor usually costs more, but you're protecting a big investment. For a rig you use monthly, outdoor is fine. For a rig that sits six months, covered or indoor pays you back in resale value.

What to check before you sign

Start with security. A gate and cameras are baseline; ask how often the lot is patrolled and whether anyone lives on site. Then look at the ground. You want a level, well-drained spot, because standing water under an RV rots tires and frames. Ask if they allow washing and maintenance, since some lots prohibit it. Confirm your insurance covers the rig while it's stored, because facility insurance rarely does. And walk the lot at night if you can. Lighting matters more than a fancy office. The top-rated facilities here, like US Storage Centers and Extra Space Storage, earn their stars with the basics done right: clean grounds, working gates, and managers who answer the phone.

Questions people ask

How many outdoor RV storage facilities are in the United States?

There are 10,032 outdoor RV storage facilities listed in the United States. That count includes lots that offer outdoor spaces alongside covered or indoor options. The average rating across these facilities is 4.7 stars, based on user reviews.

Do most outdoor RV storage spots have 24-hour access?

A majority do: 6,058 of the 10,032 outdoor facilities offer 24-hour access. That's about 60 percent. Still, check the specific lot's gate hours before you book, since access policies vary and a locked gate can ruin a trip.

Is covered or indoor storage available if I want more protection?

Yes. The directory lists 3,361 covered facilities and 5,529 indoor facilities, some of which also offer outdoor spots. Covered and indoor cost more but shield your RV from sun, hail, and rain. For long-term storage or harsh climates, they're worth considering.

What should I look for in an outdoor RV storage lot?

Check the gate and lighting, the ground surface, and whether maintenance is allowed. Confirm your insurance covers the rig while stored. Visit at night to see lighting. A level, drained spot and a responsive manager matter more than extras. Top-rated names like US Storage Centers and Extra Space Storage often get the basics right.
